mid-atlantic trail crew

Based at an old farmstead in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, the Mid-Atlantic Crew works on the Appalachian Trail from Rockfish Gap in Virginia to the New York–Connecticut state line. Sponsored by the National Park Service, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and the A.T. maintaining clubs of the mid-Atlantic region, it normally runs for eight weeks from late August to late October.

The crew is based at the Appalachian Trail Conservancy's (ATC) Scott Farm Trail Work Center, along the Appalachian Trail near Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Crew quarters and a common area are located in a bunkhouse, and a dining room/meeting room, kitchen, showers, and laundry facilities are available in the nearby farmhouse. The crew usually gathers at the Scott Farm on the Wednesday prior to the start of the crew week.

MidAtlantic Trail Crew working on Board Walk

crew week

Crew members arrive at base camp on the Wednesday afternoon or evening before their work-week for dinner and a mandatory orientation session. The crew travels to the project Thursday morning and spends the rest of the day setting up field camp and working on the project if time allows. After working on the project Friday to Sunday, on Monday the schedule is the reverse of Thursday’s—field camp is packed up, some work may be done on the project, and the crew travels back to base camp. Volunteers who will be working the next session are welcome to stay at the base camp between sessions.
